This is the end. Beyond the Blue is the fifth and final book in the Awake in the Dark Series. New to the series? Get the first three books here /dp/B00W8FZUKU All things must pass. Jeff Grobnagger knows this well enough by now. After the face melting events of Back in Black, maybe he’s ready for the end. An experiment with Amity goes weird, and all aspects of Grobnagger’s journey turn inward. New mysteries grant him peace, grant him the love for himself he could never locate before. And yet he finds himself alone again and fighting to stay that way, just as he started out, disappearing deeper and deeper within himself. If you find a way to love yourself, do you really need anyone else? And where does that path lead? Divinity or damnation? This becomes Grobnagger’s choice, and even if he doesn’t fully understand it, it will determine his fate Life or death or something worse.

I've been on the Awake in the Dark series rollercoaster from the beginning. If you've ever read a Tweet, a Facebook post or a Blog of mine, you've probably heard me talk about the series and the writers responsible for it. Heck, if you know me personally, you've probably heard my screams of delight when that perfect little file is ready on my e-reader.

As I tucked in to finish the last instalment of the series I have absolutely fallen in love with, I was perhaps a little apprehensive. After all, was it going to be everything I hoped it was? (Let's take a minute to recognise those book series that ended with us throwing the book across the room.) I dove in, head first, held on for dear life and read.

I realise this review is somewhat personal so far, but bare with me. I'll get to the nitty gritty in a moment.

I'm going to take a moment to recognise the overall message in this series; the hidden-in-plain-sight-meaning that you see but never realise until the very last pages. All along I've relished in the wonderful idea that this series, this wonderfully and hysterically funny story, could be deeply meaningful.

And that's exactly what it was.

I've said it all along, and I'll say it again. This series is powerful. Meaningful. What can be described as a comedic saga about a guy who's a basic loner, is actually intensely important, and the final chapters tie this concept together perfectly. The philosophical layers of self-discovery are explored, and it's perfect.

What is clever about the fifth instalment of this series is reminiscent of the first - lonely. Isolated. Philosophical. Grobnagger is by far, one of my favourite characters for several reasons, but none more so than his realism. From the very beginning, he has exuded realistic behaviours and thoughts that draw the reader in and instil a sense of loyalty to this unsuspecting hero. His thoughts range from skittle flavours to deeply emotional decisions that will ultimately change the course of his life.

This series will grab you, shake you around and ultimately leave you in a state of bewildered awe. McBain and Vargus are well on their way to literary success, and this series is just the beginning.

Awake in the Dark is the most meaningful and innovative series I've read in years.

Beyond the Blue Awake in the Dark Volume 5 Tim McBain LT Vargus 9781537662596 Books Reviews

I'll give the first three books in the series a decent rating because they honestly did seem to be going somewhere. The story had potential. The main protagonist is someat annoying but it had potential. The while thing fell apart in books four and five however. They were interminably long winded and the main character just became a whiney little ass. There was zero actual story development. It felt like the author's were just trying to fill up space. Book five was horrible! The story could easily have ended at book four and I would have been satisfied but no, they dragged it out and I ended up skipping paragraphs because it all essentially said the same thing. "Poor me, my life is crap and I'm depressed. I could do something about it but I'd rather last on my couch and whine in my head.". That is essentially the whole fifth book and it takes him going into a mystical blue light to realize life is OK. He could have just gone to a psychiatrist like every other person in the world. Made me wish I never started reading this drivel
“Beyond the Blue” is the fifth and final installment in the Awake in the Dark series by Tim McBain and LT Vargus. Still trying to recover from Glenn’s murder and the rather messy demise of Riston Farber and his minions, Jeff attempts to move on. But when moving on comes on the form of Ms. Babineaux tapping him as basically Farber’s replacement, an icon of the League, Jeff withdraws to the only person who he feels he can truly trust.

Amity.
Spending more and more time on the astral plane Jeff and Amity grow closer. But after an experiment with unforeseen consequences, not even Amity and the other world provides comfort any longer. Jeff finds his grasp on reality slipping as he is set on a collision course with the end, whether he is prepared or not.

Throughout the series, I have followed Jeff Grobnagger’s journey from socially inept recluse, to unknowing participant turned pawn in a game he never knew existed and finally a person so broken that he is ready to give it all up and just fade into oblivion. I thought Jeff was pretty unstable in Back in Black, but in Beyond the Blue Jeff is just downright scary. Relegated to spending time in the astral world with Amity or holed up in his home with his cats and figments of his imagination, Jeff is seriously at the end of his psychological rope. You would think with everything that had threatened him in previous books eliminated Jeff would be on top of the world, but the price he paid to get to this point may have been too much. After his initial encounter with the Blue, Jeff retreats into himself, only leaving the house when necessary and existing solely on hot showers and junk food. When Glenn, shows up things get even weirder in a sort of “Beautiful Mind” sort of way.

For as many ways that McBain and Vargus could have resolved this weird roller-coaster series, I am glad that it ended the way it did. I saw a lot of myself in Grobnagger with regard to his reclusive lifestyle and unwillingness to engage in social interactions so I was sort of rooting for the guy. Leaving the Grobnagger saga on a note such as this leaves the reader with a glimmer of hope for even the most tortured soul. While I understand that this is the end of Jeff’s story, is it really?
